Acceptance  (law) 1. An unconditional surrender or agreement to an offer.
(law) 2. An assent to an offer on the conditions that only minor modifications that do not affect any material or legal terms of the offer may be justified.

Action ex contractu  (law) A legal action for breach of a promise stated in an expressed, written or implied contract form.

Action ex delicto  (law) 1. A legal action taken for a breach of a duty that is not stated in a contract but arises from an implication of the contract.
(law) 2. A legal action that arises from a wrongful act.

Ad valorem  (general) Fees, taxes or duties that are applied as a percentage of the value of goods.

Add-Ons  (shipping) Additional charges.

Adjustment assistance  (general) Financial, training and reemployment aid to workers and technical assistance to firms and industries to help them overcome adjustment difficulties arising from increased competition.

Administrative Exception Notes (AEN)  (general) A listing of strategic and acceptable commodities that member nations of the Coordinating Committee on Multilateral Export Controls (CoCom) may approve for export independently, but must report to CoCom after the fact.

Admission temporaire  (customs) The free entry of goods normally dutiable.

advance against collection  (banking) A short term loan or credit plan extended to the seller/exporter by the seller’s bank once an agreement has been accepted by the buyer/importer of the seller’s goods. When the buyer pays for the goods, the seller’s loan is paid off. If the buyer does not pay, the seller must still fulfill the outstanding debt accrued from the loan.

Agency  (shipping) An organization working on behalf of a principal. Company who represents/acts on behalf of another entity.

Agent ad litem  (shipping/law) An agent who acts on behalf of a principal in prosecuting or defending a lawsuit.

Applicant  The buyer of foreign goods in a letter or credit transaction. The applicant asks his/her bank to establish credit for the purchase of these goods.

AI  (shipping) All Inclusive.

Air waybill (airbill)  (shipping) A shipping document used by the airlines for air freight. It is a contract for carriage that includes carrier conditions such as limits of liability and claims procedures. It also contains shipping instructions to airlines, descriptions of the commodities and applicable transportation charges. Air waybills are non- negotiable.

Alienable  (law) Reserves the ability to be transferred or conveyed.

All-Water  (shipping) Service rendered by carriers on a port to port basis; cargo moving via ocean carrier only.

AMS  (shipping) Automated Manifest Systems.

Anti-Rebating  (shipping) Document signed by shipping companies and filed with Federal Maritime Certification Commission and in ocean tariffs attesting that rebates are not allowed and will not be paid by a company.

AQ  (shipping) Any quantities.

Arbitrage  (banking/finance) A simultaneous buying and selling (or borrowing and lending) of identical securities, currencies, or commodities in two or more markets to take advantage or profit from market price differentials.

Articles of extraordinary value (AEV)  (shipping) Commodities or goods identified as high value items requiring special treatment or handling in shipping.

Arrival Notice  (shipping) Documentation that notifies consignee of arrival information and freight charges due. Form produced by carrier for advanced notification to consignee of cargo arrival.

As Freighted  (shipping) All cargoes freighted on same unit; Weight or Measure.

Assignment  (shipping) An act which involves transfer of rights, title, and interest for the purpose of assigning goods by endorsement of the bill of lading.

Attorney-in-fact  (law) An officer authorized for general business transactions or to perform a designated task of a non-legal nature on behalf of another individual or legal entity. An attorney-in-fact is a type of agent. In many countries this authority must be confirmed by the written power of an attorney.

Authentication  (law) Certification of a written document so that it is genuine, credible, and reliable. The authentication process is performed by an authorized person who approves the document as being in proper legal form and executed and signed by a person identified as having the authority to do so.
