Dangerous Cargo  (shipping) Cargo of a hazardous nature as classified under Coast Guard regulations.

Dating  (Banking) The practice of granting extended credit terms through the seller to induce buyers to receive goods in advance of required delivery dates.

DDC  (shipping) Destination Delivery Charge. A charge assessed by the carrier for handling positioning of a full container within the container yard.

Deadweight cargo  (shipping) Cargo of such weight and volume that a long ton (2, 240 pounds) is stowed in an area of less than 70 cubic feet.

Debt-for-export swap  (banking/trade) A form of trade whereby a bank arranges to export a variety of domestic products & commodities to offset part of its outstanding claims in the country.

Deconsolidation  (shipping) Breakdown for distribution of various importers LTL cargo for movement to ultimate destination.

DDP  Delivered Duty Paid; term of sale. Seller is responsible for all transportation, customs clearance, and duties (a totally prepaid shipment).

DDU  Delivered Duty Unpaid; term of sale. Seller is responsible for all transportation and customs clearance. The buyer is responsible for payment of duties.

Delivery Order  Written instruction issued by owner of freight (or authorized agent directing that the freight be released or shipped to a specified (time draft).

Demurrage  (shipping) (1) The detaining of a freight car or ship by the shipper beyond the time permitted for loading or unloading. (2) The extra charges a shipper pays for detaining a freight car or ship beyond the time permitted for loading or unloading. Also known as detention.

Direct Consignment  (shipping) One company shipping directly to another without a third party.

Discharge Port  (shipping) Port terminal where cargo is unloaded from vessel.

DIT  (shipping) Destination Interchange Terminal - The facility operated by the ocean carrier or his agent at which containers are interchanged with the delivering motor carrier.

Diversion  (shipping) A change made either in the route of a shipment in transit or of the entire ship.

Dock  (shipping) Where vessel positions itself to load/unload cargo.

Dock Receipt  (shipping) Document used to transfer cargo from drayman acting on shipper behalf of steamship line.

Documentary collections  (banking) A method of payment for goods whereby the seller ships goods to the buyer, but instructs his bank to collect a certain amount of money from the buyer in exchange for the transfer of title, shipping and other documentation thus enabling the buyer to take possession of the goods.

Documents against acceptance (D/A)  (banking) A kind of document collection. The bank releases documents to the buyer/importer against acceptance of a bill of exchange. (draft) Documents that guarantee payment at a later date.

Documents against payment (D/P)  (banking) A kind of document collection. The bank releases the documents to the buyer/importer only against a cash payment in a designated currency.

Double-column tariff  (customs) An import tariff schedule listing two rates. The rates in one column are for products imported from preferred trading partner countries and the rates in the second column are for products imported from non-preferred trading countries.

Double Stack Car  (shipping) Rail car capable of carrying two containers stacked one on top of each other.

Draft (Bill of Exchange)  (shipping) A written order for a certain sum of money to be transferred on a certain date.

Draft Sight and Time  (shipping) Sight Draft (S/D): A draft so drawn as to be payable upon presentation or acceptance.

Drawback  (shipping) 99% refund of imported, duty paid materials, which are to be exported.

Drayage  (law) Same as cartage. The charges made for hauling freight or carts, drays or trucks.

Drydock  (shipping) Used to lay up vessels for repair.

Dumping  (customs) The sale of a commodity in a foreign market at less than normal value, usually considered to be a price lower than if it were sold within the exporting country or sold to another country.

Dunnage  (shipping) Material placed around cargo to prevent damage or breakage by preventing movement. The material is normally furnished by the shipper and its weight is charged and included in the price of the shipment.

Duty Drawback  (shipping) Payment returned for cargoes re-exported or trade show material returned. A customs refund on re-exported cargo.
