Mala fide (law) In bad faith. A seller’s representation that goods are usable for a particular purpose when in fact the seller knows that the goods are not. A lie.
Manifest (shipping) An invoice of all cargo loaded on board a vessel. Entire listing of all cargo on board a vessel required by line, customs, Coast Guard.
Market access (economics) The openness of a national market to foreign products. Market access reflects a government’s willingness to permit imports to compete relatively unimpeded with similar domestically produced goods.
Marks & Numbers (shipping) The identifying detail on a package. Actual markings which appear on packages.
Material contract terms (law) Terms that are necessary to the agreement.
Mate’s receipt (shipping) A declaration issued by an officer of a vessel in the name of a shipping company stating that certain goods have been received on board the vessel. A mate’s receipt is not a title document. It is used as an interim document until the bill of lading is issued.
Memo B/L (shipping) A bill of lading issued for in house purposes for cargo short shipped or loaded in advance of issuance of full bill of lading.
Merchant Haulage (shipping) Inland transportation performed by an inland carrier contracted by and for the account of the shipper.
Minimum B/L (shipping) The least amount you can charge per individual bill of lading.
MT (shipping) 1 Metric Ton = 2,204.62 lbs or 35.314 cft.
Mutatis mutandis (law) Changing what needs to be changed. Used when cases are nearly the same or identical except for minor details.
